Replacing a Laptop AC Adapter

Let’s face it, AC adapters are not the most durable of laptop accessories. Everyone has experienced the inconvenience of an adapter malfunctioning, whether it be due to overheating, bent or broken pins, or tweaked wires. But how best to go about replacing a broken adapter? Read on.

Diagnosis

Your laptop should have an LED indicator and some sort of outlet icon on the task bar to let you know that the power cable is plugged in. If the cable is plugged in but the light isn’t on and the icon doesn’t show up, there’s a problem.  Check that the cable is connected to the adapter box and the adapter is plugged into the wall. Try switching outlets to make sure the problem isn’t simply due to a faulty outlet. Also, make sure that the cable is not being bent or pinched. If none of these things are to blame, your adapter is most likely broken.

Decision

Now it is time to decide whether to purchase a direct replacement – usually a more expensive but more reliable choice – or to choose from one of many third-party adapter options. If you choose to order a direct replacement, all that is required is to make sure that the item numbers match. This number is almost always located on a sticker on the underside of the adapter box.

If you are ordering a third-party adapter, things tend to get a bit more complicated.

The item number is still key to determining which adapters will work with your laptop, though there is often a lot of overlap between models with some adapters working for a wide range of laptops and some working for very few. For example, laptop battery part number ac-160 is compatible with a wide range of Compaq Presario laptops, including the 2200, 2800, and a wide range of M, X, and V lines. There are many databases available online with which to look up AC adapter compatibility information, and going into your local dealer to inquire in person is always a good option. If possible, it is a good idea to purchase an adapter that will function with the widest range available. Even better if you own more than one laptop and can find an adapter that works for them all! Just be sure that the adapter’s voltage equals or exceeds the voltage required for the laptop to run; Otherwise, you’ve just ordered an expensive, unsightly paperweight.

Alternative?

A good alternative is to purchase a universal AC adapter, as they come with an assortment of tips to fit into multiple brands and models of notebooks, and they have switches to adjust the voltage as necessary. This way, you can pretty much always be sure that your adapter will work.

Conclusion

There is no simple solution when purchasing an AC adapter, as all laptops have different requirements. Your  item number and voltage requirements are the keys to success in the wide world of AC adapters. Keep these things in mind and you can’t go wrong. Good luck!

Cleaning Electronics

clean-monitor

I don’t know about you but I sometimes don’t think about cleaning my electronics until they no longer work properly. I have had to put the electronics on my cleaning schedule just as I do other household chores. The benefits of this is they last longer, are not breeding germs and I can actually see the screens on the appliance!

Here are some tips to help keep your electronics clean:

  • Wipe the outside of your DVD player with a soft microfiber cloth. For grime or sticky stains, dip the cloth in alcohol and wipe down. For the inside of the DVD player, invest in a DVD disc cleaner. It looks like a regular DVD disc, and you play it as you would a DVD.
  • To help your cordless phones power up properly, rub an eraser over the metal contacts on the handset and phone base. It will help the phone connect properly and charge fully.
  • For your cellphone, wipe it down every few days with an antibacterial wipe. Gets off all the germs and gunk from the keys, screen and base.
  • For your computer keyboard, remove the oil residue from your fingers by wiping the individual keys with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or facial toner.
  • To clean your TV and computer screens, turn them off  and wipe them down with a soft cloth (never paper towels as they may scratch the screen) dipped in alcohol.
  • If your computer mouse is the ball type, unscrew the back and remove the ball. Wipe off the ball and then use a cotton swab and tweezers to clean out the mouse.
  • To protect your small electronics like your MP3 players, cell phones, and cameras, you can buy stylish protectors and cases for them. Or you can take a clean child’s or baby’s sock to cover and protect your electronic when not in use.

If you have any other ideas on how to keep your electronics clean, please leave me a comment with your tip!
